Christmas in the park.

December 24, 2008

Christmas in the Park takes place every Christmas (but of course) at Plaza de Cesar Chavez in downtown San Jose. Hundreds of Christmas trees are decorated by local community groups, charity organisations, local businesses (including Lima Family Mortuaries).

It’s great fun, particularly on a sunny day. In addition to the trees there are lots of animated displays; bears playing in a brass band, penguins on a carousel, elves on Christmas trains.

But it’s sad too. One brightly decorated tree, covered in photos of smiling children may grab your attention. And then you see that all these kids have vanished. Another shows those who have died in the services; firefighters, police, the armed forces. Or those involved in wars at Christmas time. The tree on the left is dedicated to “helping families cope with the loss of their baby before, during, or after birth” ; the one on the right to finding homes for abandoned dogs.
